Northern Rhode Island is host to the state's capital city of Providence. Roger Williams, a religious exile from the Massachusetts Bay Colony founded Providence in 1636. The city plays hosts to several colleges, such as Brown University, Rhode Island College and the famous Johnson and Wales. Providence is one of the three largest cities in New England.
